 Letter From the Editor | WINTER 2014

Welcome

EVERY YEAR ON DECEMBER 26TH, I TAKE DOWN OUR TREE AND MOURN THE END OF THE HOLIDAYS. It's sad to me when the music stops and the lights come down. But by January 1st I'm ready for the start of a new year and I begin to look forward to spring! There is something therapeutic about sweeping out all of those old, dead pine needles from the tree that makes me feel cleansed and ready for change! What do you hope to accomplish in the new year? Is this going to be your year to 'have it all'? Or maybe you need to figure out what having it all really means to YOU?

I asked this issue's featured woman, Kem Graham, to give us her definition of having it all. I think when you read her answer you will understand why I called this article "Kem Graham Redefines Having It All." I also hope it provokes you to think about this convoluted phrase and encourages you to ask yourself what 'it all' means to you. It's an opportunity to be truly introspective and honest with yourself about what's important to you—personally and professionally. It's a question that is relevant to each and every one of us, and to me. How you define it defines you!

Also with the new year comes the desire for change. Denise Vakili's makeover in this issue is an amazing example of change! Wow! Maybe you're not looking for a full makeover, but a new look for your Valentine's Day date? Check out Brittany Adamson's article on hair and makeup on page 24 for inspiration. Gained a few extra pounds over the holidays? If so, health coach Marti Avila gives us a nice reminder of the ABC's of weight loss on page 20. Or maybe you've shed the weight but you can't seem to get control of that extra little roll of arm "stuff" that spills out of your tank top? America Daschle at Rejeuviné Med Spa has the solution for you! On page 18 read about the brand new, amazing device Rejeuviné has that can help you with your trouble spots (Psst...even the TV show The Doctors got in on this one!). And then there's our new and improved website!! If you like our magazine, please check out the website (www.northcountywoman.com). It's everything the magazine has to offer and more! Do us a favor and answer our web polls. The more information you give to us the better we can serve you. We have so much to learn from our fellow women. “Mega What?!?"

Annual Business Women’s Mega Mixer!

MARCH IS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH. If you’re a business woman in San Diego County and you haven’t heard of the Business Women’s Mega Mixer, you’re missing out! Celebrating their 5th year, the annual Business Women’s Mega Mixer brings together hundreds of professional women, corporate women, female entrepreneurs, and those who support women in business. The event is an annual celebration of Women’s History Month and a spectacular event that recognizes achievements of amazing women in business. According to Michelle Bergquist, Co-Founder of the Business Women’s Mega Mixers, “Our annual celebration is an annual event showcasing female entrepreneurs, women’s organizations and clubs, along with recognizing a few amazing women with our Women Making History awards. It’s pure fun, celebration and networking to support women in business and to recognize how far we’ve come as career women and entrepreneurs!” The event may be a celebration, but the intent of the Business Women’s Mega Mixer is also a philanthropic gesture that “gives back.” According to Bergquist, “We decided in our first year of hosting our event that each year we would select a worthy women’s nonprofit association and give them visibility and raise money for their organization.” This year’s selected nonprofit beneficiary is the National Women’s Veteran’s Association of America, www.nationalwomenveterans.us . Collectively, to date, the Business Women’s Mega Mixer events have raised over $30,000 to support local women’s nonprofit organizations like the Women’s History Museum, The YWCA of San Diego, Women Give San Diego, Working Wardrobes and Dress for Success San Diego. The 2014 Business Women’s Mega Mixer will be hosted at the beautiful Bahia Hotel & Resort in Mission Bay on Thursday, March 20th from 530pm to 8pm. For more information on the event, visit www. BusinessWomensMegaMixer.com.

 Music | LAUREL SORENSON

Laurel Sorenson

The Road to Nashville and Her Quest To Be a Rock Star WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

AS A 9-YEAR OLD, SINGER/SONGWRITER LAUREL SORENSON, NOW 19, TOOK PIANO LESSONS TO AVOID GOING TO DAYCARE. She loved it immediately, but her long-term musical ambitions didn’t sink in until much later. Her inspiration could have been the fact that some of her high school teachers had to repeatedly ask her to stop singing in class. It could have been that while studying poetry, Sorenson felt compelled to bring a keyboard to school and sing her poems to convey her messages adequately. One thing was certain: in her sophomore year at San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas, she started writing songs, people loved them, and by her junior year, Sorenson could no longer deny the fact that she wanted to be a rock star.

6 | North County Woman Winter 2014

In search of a college where she could truly be happy, Sorenson read “Schools that Rock: The Rolling Stone College Guide,” and settled on Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where she currently attends as a songwriting major with a music business minor. One of the few universities in the United States that offers music focus, Sorenson felt it was a perfect fit for her to learn the business of music and flourish in her pursuit of being a singer/songwriter. “...I was really enthused about going to college,” said Sorenson. “I was like, oh, this is the place for me, I know it... but it took a while to convince my parents that music was a real thing,” she continued. “Now they’re totally on board.” Reaching number two on Reverbnation in San Diego, Sorenson has been described as “a new queen of sass,” specializing in bad assery, and after listening to her music, most would agree that description is quite accurate. Sorenson’s music consists of soulful vocals and darkly defiant lyrics. Along with her band, The Ink Slingers, Sorenson has played over 60 shows at local venues such as local coffee shops, House of Blues San Diego, and The Epicentre in Mira Mesa, where they have developed a passionately loyal fan base. “My band got in trouble for playing too loud in the mornings,” said Sorenson. “Even though we have played a lot of coffee shops, we’re loud. We’re rockin.’” This past fall, Sorenson released her first EP, titled “See What You Got,” produced by Rainbow Hank Productions, which includes song titles “See What You Got,” “Softest Place to Fall,” “Stay,” “Send Me the Ocean,” and “All I’ve Ever Been.” The new EP is available now on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon mp3, Soundcloud as well as Lou’s Records in Encinitas. Next up for Sorenson is a 2014 California Summer tour with her band The Ink Slingers. Information can be found on her Facebook page at Facebook.com/LaurelSorensonMusic.

Etiquette | BUSINESS LUNCH 

Lunch:

AN IMPORTANT MEAL FOR YOUR CAREER & SOCIAL LIFE

BY ANDIE BEYER GREEN HOLLY'S GIRLFRIEND

”I haven’t trusted polls since I read that 62% of women had affairs during their lunch hour. I’ve never met a woman in my life who would give up lunch for sex.” –Erma Bombeck

ARE YOU EATING LUNCH? Of course you are (at least I hope you are for your health and state of mind). But are you eating lunch with colleagues or friends at least once per week? It’s the easiest multitasking you can do in your day. It takes about an hour, so it doesn’t drag on forever. You need to eat anyway and eating with a colleague, friend or spouse gives you a chance to connect during a part of the day when both morning and night people are actually lucid.

Andy Beyer Green

Andie lives in La Costa, California. Holly's Girlfriend (hollysgirlfriend.com) provides etiquette and manners as well as conversation news. See northcountywoman.com for more on etiquette and manners from Holly's Girlfriend.

If you are eating with a colleague or boss, this is a chance to get to know him or her at a personal level. Keep the business to a minimum and just get to know each other. Understanding how people tick is key to your success when working with them. You don’t need to have a major agenda to get to know every single thing about your colleagues, just have a nice conversation and let it flow. On the social side, use lunch as a chance to catch up with friends who you can’t see regularly at work, home or school. This is also a good time to connect with your spouse. If you have younger children who are around a lot when you are at home, you can actually talk with without sidelining as a referee. If you are thinking: “I don’t have time” just try it out for a month. I go to Subway with a friend once per month. (Yes, Subway. We both like those subs. Plus, if we can hit the Subway near the beach, we get to see the hunky lifeguards stroll in.) Sometimes we howl laughing and other times we’re talking about serious stuff. Regardless, I feel happy and energized to see my friend. Even if you can only do one lunch each week, make the time. It’s worth it.

Do Opposites Attract? BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN WE WANT TO MARRY OURSELVES! In honor of Valentines Day, I’m exploring truth in the theory that opposites not only attract; they make for long sustaining unions. Snopes.com lists this notion as urban legend, but cites nine instances when a woman’s bra size made it entirely credible.

Stephanie Lewis

Stephanie Lewis wishes you a loving, laughing Valentines Day from Carlsbad, where she raises six kids and works as a freelance writer. Reach her at TheQuoteGal@yahoo.com and find her current novel, “Lullabies & Alibis” on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Based on past, personal (and polarized) relationships, even 38 double D’s couldn’t help my marriages, which went downhill faster than Lady Gaga belts out, “Bad Romance.” Now I don’t mean the Donny and Marie thing, (“she’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock n’ roll”) I’m talking fundamental differences. So can extreme opposites actually last? First off, I’ve been married 7 times. Note: In reality I have two ex-spouses, (currently best buddies and both requesting next time I walk down the aisle, he should be a golfer with a fishing boat!) but they claim they’ll collaborate and sue me if I write about them. Like you can copyright aggravation?! Maybe now they’ll join forces to search for the stashed away five other husbands instead. Meanwhile, on with examples… Husband number 6 (really #1 or #2, but shhhh!) seemed like your typical bachelor during courtship, but I soon realized he was a Sciencemathologist! (I’m a creative/emotional type -- just in case fabricating five extra marriages and concocting the word “Sciencemathologist” didn’t tip you off!) He custom ordered Valentine Conversation candy with the periodic table elements stamped on them. I found this slightly endearing - - after all, how many chalky heart-shaped Pepto-Bismols proclaiming, “crazy4u” can you consume? And there would be instances when I needed the atomic number for both helium and aluminum, right? Suppose I simultaneously bought a balloon and a roll of Reynold’s Wrap? Hey, it could happen. Bonus: I got to brag about our “combustible chemistry.” But would that translate to sexual sparks or burned bridges? Time would tell. “No diamond engagement ring, please. I’ll just loop some carbon atoms around my finger,” said no BrideTo-Be ever! Over the years, instead of anniversaries symbolized with traditional presents of paper, linen, silk, bronze and pearls, he favored titanium, sulfur, lithium, sodium (sodium got me a saltshaker) hydrogen, and chlorine. And no, that last one doesn’t mean he built us a swimming pool. My friends deemed it

“quaint” but I wasn’t sticking around for the big ten year gifts -- plutonium and arsenic! A certain other husband was a painstakingly slow decision maker, fastidious planner, and tossed food out days before sell-by dates. I’m carefree, spontaneous, (nicer than saying disorganized and impulsive) and happen to know Dannon puts premature expirations on yogurt. Heck, I’d throw caution to the wind and eat day old bread, if I ate bread - - but that’s another column, my fellow Carbophobes. Needless to say, leaving the house together was impossible, let alone vacations. Miles ahead, I’d sneak through airport security, (harboring full-size tubes of Colgate,) while back home, he deliberated over the sink - - should toothpaste really have baking soda in it? How was intimacy, you might inquire? Scheduled and organized. Or was that a game of “Twister” we played? (“Left hand on red negligee!”) Grocery shopping was equally regimented, with elaborate lists for a week’s worth of dinners. Who knows on Sunday if they’ll be in the mood for beef stew on Wednesday in the dining room? Or for Beefcake on Friday in the bedroom?! But I’m not alone with these oil & water issues. My friend Tiffany (who won’t sue me) expresses herself with eloquent romantic phrases that Hallmark plagiarizes. However, her boyfriend (who doesn’t care enough to send the very best) is one of those “Love ya” guys. Only he won’t spell “love” correctly, so she gets “Luv ya!” And exactly what part of speech is “Ya” anyhow? Pretty sure it’s an exclamation like “Duh or “Meh.” If a man can’t commit to an actual Personal Pronoun, then he shouldn’t be “dangling his participles” in her direction. Today she excitedly called to report a revelation; he switched to “Wuv You!” Not wanting to shatter a Tiffany Epiphany, I said, “Congratulations, he’s one step closer to Kittenspeak.” Footnote: As you read this, I’ll be answering the door to find both my exes standing united, holding a court summons. On the porch, a Bunsen burner and some stale Sourdough. “Even though you didn’t use our names and you changed our marital numerical order, we still recognized ourselves in your column,” they’ll accuse in unison. And I’ll be hard pressed to deny it - - after all, personality traits as distinctively irritating as theirs are hard to disguise. But I’ll finally have my answer… Opposites don’t just attract, they can attack!

Estate Planning | WILLS 

Wills: What They Do and What to Think About Before Writing One

BY BECCA FLETCHER

IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT, A YOUNG COUPLE OUT FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN. They have left the kids at home with a babysitter. Tragically, on the way home, they are hit by a drunk driver and neither one survive. Did they have their estate plan done? Did they, at the very least, have a will naming guardians for their minor children? The simplest way to handle estate planning for your family is to have a will. Often, especially if you own a home, a will in conjunction with a revocable living trust is a better choice for estate planning. Let’s look at wills and what they can, and should, do. At a basic level, a will should do three things: 1) say who inherits your property when you die 2) say who should be in charge of ushering your will through the probate process and 3) name a guardian for your minor children. Although these topics seem straightforward, there may be more to making these decisions than you initially think. Here are some things to consider before writing your will.

Becca Fletcher

If you would like help with planning your own estate, please contact Becca Fletcher at becca@beccafletcherlaw.com and visit beccafletcherlaw.com.

Who Inherits Your Property and Possessions When You Die? If you are married, are you going to leave everything to your spouse? Or would you like to set some money aside just for your children? Are there family heirlooms specific to your side of the family that should go to someone other than your spouse? Are there organizations or charities that you would like to benefit? Is there a close friend to whom you would like to leave a special gift? Practically speaking, is there enough cash in your accounts to cover your debts? If not, you may want to specify which assets should or should not be sold, and you may want to consider whether you have adequate life insurance. Whom Should You Appoint as Executor? The executor of your estate is the person you name in your will to be in charge of administrative tasks through the probate process. This person will ultimately make distributions to your beneficiaries. (Note: if you want to avoid the probate process entirely, you will need to have a properly funded revocable living trust in addition to a will). The person you nominate as executor can be a friend or family member who may or may not be a beneficiary. No matter who you choose as executor, the person nominated should be financially responsible and capable of handling administrative tasks efficiently. If your options of people to nominate are slim, you may even consider naming a professional fiduciary as the executor. A professional fiduciary will, for a fee (often 1% of the value of the estate), manage the administrative tasks of probate, such as gathering assets, paying debts, liquidating accounts, and making distributions.

Who Should Care For Your Children If You Cannot? If you are a parent, I’ll bet you would agree that there is nothing worse than imagining what would happen to your children if you and your spouse were no longer able to take care of them. But what is truly worse is the fact that because you didn’t plan properly, the state has to get involved by placing your children with a guardian who you may not have chosen. In your will, you should nominate your choice for guardian of your children. This person will likely be a relative or a friend. When deciding, consider things such as: the age of the person nominated; how old this person will be when your children reach the age of eighteen; their ability to keep up with the pace of parenting your children; is the person you nominate close by, or will your children be forced to relocate; are there other children of the parents that you’re considering as guardians; will your children mesh into the family well; are additional resources going to be necessary for the guardians to make room for your children; and if you are nominating a couple, would you want your children to stay with one person or the other if that couple were to split up? Ultimately, there are many things to consider when making this important choice. Don’t let the courts end up deciding this for you! Remember, if you die without a will, the state will decide who inherits your assets, who administers your estate, and even who cares for your children. Having a living trust can accomplish all of the same objectives (and many more) as a will, and it can also avoid the timely and expensive probate process.

Redefines Having it All BY KERRY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

THE FIRST TIME I MET KEM GRAHAM I KNEW SHE WOULD MAKE A GREAT FEATURED WOMAN. Kem is an accomplished woman. She attended Torrey Pines High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from UCLA. Her curriculum vitae reads as follows: former teacher at Rancho Santa Fe Elementary; educator guide at the San Diego Zoo; consultant to the Zoological Society of San Diego; director of business development for Crossflo Systems, a software company; and the Director of Admissions at The Rhoades School. Currently, Kem is serving as vice president of business development for Rallyhood, Inc.

However, what Kem has accomplished professionally isn’t what made me choose her as our featured woman. I chose Kem because, to me, she is the epitome of “having it all.” She is a woman who puts her family first and relishes in what she has right in front of her. She’s stunning to look at, but it’s her heart and compassion for humans and animals alike that really draw you to her. Her elevated sense of awareness is evident in how she defines having it all. As you read this article, I hope it inspires you to examine your life and encourages you to think about what having it all truly means to you. NCW: You just started a new adventure and it’s called Rallyhood. Tell our readers about Rallyhood and why we should all rally to incorporate it into our lives? KG: The genesis of Rallyhood, our CEO and Founder Patti Olson

Rogers, who happens to be a dear friend of mine, started the company based on her three-year journey through breast cancer to wellness. She was most touched by the kindness of community. Despite the overwhelming support of her community, Patti became aware of how the actual electronic effort to help her was cumbersome and muddled. Sign-up lists for dinners, school pick ups and drop offs, and other generous offers of help were scattered all over. These kind acts inspired her and her husband to start Rallyhood. Rallyhood enables any group, team, organization etc...to rally around a specific cause in one convenient place. This technology gives those who choose to rally around you an organized forum for discussion and planning in one mobile app. It streamlines communication in a remarkably unique way and truly reduces the electronic stress we all encounter when trying to manage our day-to-day lives. I’ve created a rally just around my family as it helps to keep us all informed and organized. It’s a great way for all the busy North County Women out there to stay organized while juggling the numerous social activities in their lives. I also use Rallyhood for my Rodan+Fields business. It allows me to keep track of customer orders all in one location. Furthermore, it allows me to communicate with my team of consultants seamlessly. I believe all things happen for a reason and this opportunity to work with Rallyhood couldn’t have come at a better time for me professionally. It allows me to work with all the things that I am passionate about such as education, kids groups and teams,

church groups, and animal advocacy. Taking on this endeavor and being able to work with such a dear friend has truly brought such joy to my life. NCW: The theme of this article is having it all. In my opinion, having it all comes down to each individual and what she considers “it all” to be. To you, what does this phrase mean? KG: This is easy for me to answer. With four children, having it all to me comes down to having four healthy children. If my family is healthy, I have it all. Could I add a few frivolous things to the list? Of course, but those things don’t define who I am. I think the key is wanting and appreciating what you have right in front of you. NCW: You have a husband, four teenagers, two dogs, three cats, two chickens, a snake, and a horse! Your life is full! How do you find peace and balance? Do you think we put too much emphasis on being super women today? KG: We all need to find what balances us. For me, I’ve always been a working mom and my kids respect that; having that respect and knowing that I can support us gives me peace. I was a single mother for six years before meeting my current husband. My husband Philip is amazing! He’s loving and supportive and an excellent stepfather. It takes a special man to accept a woman and all four of her children! However, it’s important to me to contribute financially to the family, and I want to teach each of my children to be self sustaining. I especially want my 14-yearold twin daughters to recognize the importance of education and having a career. As a woman in today’s society, I think it’s relevant to be capable of supporting yourself. A large part of what brings me relaxation and balance is my animals. My crew (my family) works as a team and if we can help anyone or any animal we do. Our latest addition is a new puppy that was found at the dump. He is now a part of our family. We took in a kitten we found in a shoebox on the soccer field. Most people don’t find a new puppy who is chewing up your shoes while you’re on a conference call relaxing, but I do. The key to finding balance is prioritizing and adjusting. Making time for what is and isn’t important. It’s a sliding scale and what’s important today might be different tomorrow. It’s all relevant to what’s going on in my family and who needs what and when. As for the emphasis we put on being super women, I think the most important thing we can do for ourselves is not to compare and contrast our lives to those of others. It’s keeping your eye on what’s in front of you and appreciating what you DO have. Does that mean I don’t have goals and aspirations? Absolutely not. I’m simply saying the drive to accomplish your goals should be fueled by what’s important to you and not by what someone else has or what they’ve accomplished. Strive to succeed at what makes you happy! If the opportunity presents itself to improve upon

 Featured Woman | WINTER 2014 or make a positive change in my life to better my happiness I will. Right now, having a healthy family and my career completes me and I’m very happy!

THE GRAND DEL MAR

NCW: Who, so far, has been the most influential woman in your life and why? KG: Hands down that would be my mother. She fascinates me. As her daughter, I have been able to witness the progression of her life and look back on what she’s accomplished with such admiration! Nobody works harder than my mother. She has a master’s degree in reading and has taken that education and created a successful non-profit called United Through Reading. She also created a program called Reading Legacies which allows for the mentoring of families who have an incarcerated parent so that the children interact through books with the parent. I look at her, this party of one (with the support of my father of course) and I am amazed! She has been my rock, and she’s an amazing Nana to my children. Sundays are our family dinner nights, and we do it every Sunday. NCW: If you could only pass on one trait to both of your daughters, what would that trait be? KG: Probably empathy. I think that anything I’ve ever been good at in my life is due to the fact that I try to always crawl into the other person’s shoes and figure out where they’re coming from. When you really actually care about the person sitting across from you, everything becomes real and you work harder to help or listen. I think this is an important trait to have not only in your personal life but in business as well. We live in selfish times, and I think it’s important to truly understand and listen to others. Every person on the planet wants to be heard. NCW: What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment and why? KG: I feel the most pride and sense of accomplishment when someone compliments me on my kids. A lot of what I’ve done over time in raising this crew is the result of us going through everything—together. We’re a close knit group, and nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing them growing up to be genuinely good people. NCW: Do you have a bucket list and, if so, what are some of the things on it? KG: If I had to selfishly pick something on my bucket list, it would be to spend a month in Africa on safari. I would want to be right down in there with the animals. I have a BA in physical anthropology from UCLA with an emphasis on primate behavior. Behavioral studies on mammals is a passion of mine. It’s what I did my thesis on. It would be an out-of-body, out-of-time experience for me! NCW: I walked away from the interview thinking about my own life and feeling immensely grateful for all that I have right in front of me. Good health truly trumps all, but taking the time to appreciate the beauty in our everyday lives and acknowledging the joy it elicits makes life grand. It brought me back to when my son was a young toddler. I soaked up the moments when that little boy would be fascinated and in awe of something as simple as a beautiful butterfly. Seeing the world through his eyes allowed me to better appreciate the little things in life that we often take for granted. Listening to Kem define her idea of having it all evoked the same feelings of gratitude in me. I can only hope it inspires you to feel the same way.

culpt TruS

A TRULY NON-INVASIVE WAY TO SCULPT YOUR BODY’S TROUBLE SPOTS!

BY AMERICA DASCHLE DIRECTOR OF REJEUVINÉ MEDSPA

18 | North County Woman Winter 2014

DO YOU SUFFER FROM MUFFIN TOP, BRA FAT OR DO YOU HAVE A STUBBORN AREA THAT YOU JUST CAN’T GET RID OF NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU EXERCISE? There is an answer via breakthrough technology six years in the making: TruSculpt by Cutera! TruSculpt is a radio frequency device for non-invasive body smoothing that is also FDA approved for reducing the appearance of cellulite. TruSculpt utilizes the proven science of apoptosis, the process of cell self-destruction. Exposing a fat cell to 45 degrees celsius and sustaining that temperature for three minutes causes a thermal injury thus programming the cell to die. Once the cell is programed to die, the membrane begins to break down, allowing the lipids to carry the fat to be eliminated. Think of a fish oil capsule. The sustained heat of your body causes a breakdown of the outer capsule releasing the fish oil. Lipids are like a delivery truck for your body that come to pick up the fish oil and take it away. This is a natural, gradual process with visible results seen as early as four weeks after treatment; although some of our clients have experienced an initial tightening due to the deep heating of the tissue. Maximum results may take up to 12 weeks.

Real People Real Solutions Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Laser Treatments | Medical Facials Dr. Michael J. Brucker Board Certied Plastic Surgeon

During a treatment, the 2.5 inch by 2.5 inch TruSculpt hand piece is placed on your skin in the area to be treated. A radio frequency pulse is applied to deeply heat the tissue. Once the cycle is complete the hand piece is moved until the selected area has been treated or all 16 pulses have been used. The treatment lasts about an hour and can be a little hot, but we have found some tricks to help make it more comfortable. There is no downtime and you can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Two or three treatments are recommended for each area with the time between treatments being four to six weeks. Rejeuviné charges $650 for each hour of treatment. TruSculpt is not a weight loss solution or a replacement for liposuction; however it works great on removing fat from those troublesome spots. The areas in which we have seen great results are bra fat, stomach, muffin top, inner thighs, and saddlebags. And just in...a new, smaller hand piece that fits right under your chin, and it can also get the fat that hangs out of your tank top under your arms. We, at Rejeuviné, are very excited to have this device in our hands and thrilled with its results! Many of our clients are so happy with the outcome of their first area treated that they are coming back to have additional areas treated! There are many devices out there that deplete the fat cell but don’t actually destroy it. Do your homework before spending your money on a body contouring treatment! Rejeuviné is the only facility in San Diego with this incredible technology! Call today to schedule a free consultation to see if TruSculpt is right for you!

Our very own Dr. Michael Brucker taped an episode for the TV program “The Doctors” on TruSculpt which aired in January.

The ABC's

of Weight Loss

BY MARTI AVILA

HELLO HEALTHY ONE There are guidelines, instructions, recipes, and road maps for just about anything you want to do in life. Most everything from baking a cake to sending a missile to outer space has already been done, and all of these usually come with their own set of instructions. So why should weight loss be any different? Albeit there are usually no “one size fits all” for everything you do, but when it comes to losing weight most human bodies work the same way.

Marti Avila

Marti Avila is a Board-Certified Holistic Health Coach that has decades of living a healthy, happy lifestyle finding humor wherever she can. Marti specializes in helping individuals, as well as corporations, with weight loss, health issues, and obtaining their long-term health goals from her private practice in both Nevada and California. Remembering that weight loss, and just as important maintaining a healthy weight, is not only a daily practice but an everything-you-eat and NOT-eat practice. I’ve put together a few basics that may remind you to stay on track and help tremendously. To start a healthy daily regimen, I suggest the following: 1. A mug full of hot water with lemon and honey first thing in the morning. According to Ayurveda philosophy (one of the oldest forms of healing the body naturally with food and herbs), digestion is the most important function of the body. With 80% of the immune system located in the gut and where brain chemistry is made, digestion should be treated with the utmost care and importance. By drinking hot water with lemon and honey first thing in the morning, you are aligning the body with nature’s rhythms, boosting your immune system, balancing your PH, aiding digestion, ingesting a natural diuretic, and hydrating the lymph system. 2. Be mindful of everything you eat. You probably already know what is good and bad for you to eat. The question is how do I NOT eat the bad stuff and continue to eat the good stuff? When thinking about what you want to eat, take a moment and think about what you are really hungry for. Check in with yourself to make sure you are not just eating for emotional reasons. Then, before starting to eat, take a few deep breaths, look at your food, and give thanks. This will give your body a few moments to prepare for digestion…and being grateful is

20 | North County Woman Winter 2014

always a wonderful state to be in (unless you are in a state where it’s really warm right now). 3. Take small bites and chew your food until it is completely liquid before you swallow (about 20 to 30 chews per bite). This means that you should NOT drink any liquids with your meals to allow the stomach acids/enzymes to completely break down your food and take from it all the nourishments that your body needs to repair itself, live, and thrive. 4. Cut down your portion size. As you chew longer and take your time eating, you’ll find that you get full faster and stay satisfied longer. 5. Exercise, or what I prefer to call it, MOVE! Movement should be thought of as something you do naturally on a daily basis. Think of it as one of your regular, daily bodily functions. For instance, you don’t complain when you have to brush your hair, brush your teeth and get dressed, correct? You just do it and accept it as part of your day. Movement should be thought of in the same way—an integral part of your day. Plan when you’re going to move on a daily basis. Don’t think or complain about it. JUST DO IT! The three elements of movement are: cardio, weight lifting, and stretching (or yoga). Every day do at least 20 to 30 minutes of movement a day. Period! 6. Drink water. Preferably Alkaline water. It serves several purposes such as: detoxifies the body, provides anti-aging benefits, supplements immune support, assists with the absorption of Vitamin C (which prevents bone loss), hydrates you more effectively, and most importantly, in my opinion, it helps keep the weight off because it keeps your body’s Alkaline balanced. 7. Sleep. Get seven to nine continuous hours of sleep every night. 8. Most importantly, love yourself. By loving yourself you’ll make sure that you will take good care of yourself because if you don’t, who will?

 Your Health | THERMOGRAPHY

It’s All About Prevention; Or At Least It Should Be!

Detect breast cancer 8 to 10 years before the current method.

BY CATHERINE JOHNSON SILK THERMAL IMAGING

Don’t just detect breast cancer, TODAY, MAINSTREAM MEDICINE FOCUSES ON TREATMENT OF DISEASE RATHER THAN PREVENTION OF DISEASE. Why? Because that’s where the money is. Last year, nearly $3 trillion was spent on health care and virtually all that money was spent on “treating” disease. Despite this, more Americans are sicker today than ever before with diseases that are largely preventable such as, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and depression just to name a few. Each year more money is spent on treatment, which is mere patchwork, even though it has become crystal clear that treatments do NOT enable us to live a longer, better life. So how do we go about preventing disease? One way is to listen to your body. If eating certain foods gives you an upset stomach, don’t eat those foods. Find a doctor who will spend time and listen to you and not just hand you the “little purple pill.” Eat organic whenever possible. Avoid processed foods and soda, or sugary drinks and above all avoid artificial sweeteners. Another way is to take a peek inside the body, safely, to see what’s going on. How do you do this? Medical Thermography. Thermography is a safe and painless way to identify breast cancer and inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is a disease. It is the main contributing factor to all chronic degenerative diseases, and the root cause of the two greatest killers in America: cancer and heart disease. Thermography provides identification of early risk factors like estrogen dominance, lymphatic congestion, chronic inflammation, and temperature variations. This is great news because an abnormal result from a thermogram often buys time so that natural interventions such as detoxifications, supplements, diet, and lifestyle changes can influence the outcome. Thermography uses no radiation, no bodily contact, and is 100% safe. We conduct monthly seminars at our San Marcos and downtown San Diego locations. Me Over! WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

The life of a nurse can be hectic and tiresome, and when we met with Heidi Benson, 48, she explained just that. A mother of five girls, Benson works tireless hours as a nurse in a busy emergency department. She explained that when she gets off work, she comes home and changes out of her scrubs and into her sweats. “I feel like because I’m never really required to dress up or wear much makeup, I really need some help developing some fashion sense and makeup know-how to learn what looks good on me,” said Benson. Our experts were up for the challenge, and when they were finished with her, Benson had a new look she could be proud of. THE HAIR: “Heidi is super cute and has absolutely beautiful features,” explained stylist and master colorist Amberlee Piercy of Noni Salon in Encinitas. “Because her hair is very fine, I added some more layers to create a bit of lift and more fullness. I also updated her look by bringing her fringe to the side, supported by some more face-framing layers. For Heidi's color, we needed a bit more pop! I added a brighter blonde with a more neutral lowlight to cut out the brassy tones that had lived there. The result was fluidity and light! THE MAKEUP: For Heidi’s makeup, all I had to do was enhance her naturally beautiful features,” said makeup expert, Charlene Hooker of Love Love Love It, Makeup by Charlene. “I gave her a natural and soft-looking eyeliner in forest green and used gold and brown shadows

22 | North County Woman Winter 2014

that enhanced her natural hazel eye color and coordinated with her outfit. On her cheeks, I contoured and blushed with terra cotta tones, staying with the warm look we were aiming for. Next, I finished off by mixing two lip colors-- coral and soft rose-- to bring out the colors of the scarf and enhance her naturally gorgeousshaped lips.” THE LOOK: “Because Heidi doesn’t dress up often, we gave her a comfortable, casual look that is perfect for winter, yet can be worn right into spring,” said wardrobe stylist Betsy Simpson of Fairen Del Boutique in Carlsbad Village. “She has those great long legs, so we gave her a tight skinny jean tucked into some cute short suede boots with a medium heel to show them off. Next, we fitted her in a gorgeous, mustard-yellow leather jacket over a casual t-shirt. And, of course, no look is complete without some accessories, so we gave her a colorful scarf and a cute, modern belt to finish off the look.” When asked about her new look, Heidi explained, “How fun it was to feel like a princess for a day, pampered and dressed. I feel so much thankfulness for the gifted hair dresser, makeup artist, fashion guru, and photographer for making a tired mom/grandmother feel beautiful!” And she does look beautiful! F

resh Looks For the New Year and Valentine’s Day Date Night BY BRITTANY ADAMSON FOUNDER QUATTRA VIA SALON AND SPA

AS WE HEAD INTO THE NEW YEAR, WE ARE REMINDED OF WHAT WE HAVE RESOLVED TO CHANGE OR ENHANCE IN OUR LIVES; WHO WE ARE; AND WHAT WE HAVE BECOME BECAUSE OF IT. The unifying role this time of year plays in our lives is undeniable. Teaming up with our inner selves and with others to make a change is a lesson that can be relearned every year. "The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety,” said W. Somerset Maugham. Give forth your best self this year, and I'll help you look great while doing it. Love it or hate it, Valentine’s day is just around the corner. Whether you are planning on spending the night with your love or a night with the girls, I have the perfect go-to styles to make sure you will look desirable, sexy, sweet, sophisticated, wild, sultry, romantic, and beautiful! If you’re looking for a sexier V-Day style, your answer is volume and curls, curls, curls! You can achieve different looks with just a couple techniques. For soft, sultry curls, place medium-sized hot rollers from the bottom of your hair up to the roots and leave in for 20 minutes. After removing, separate curls with your fingers and spritz with shine spray. I love Aveda's Brilliant

24 | North County Woman Winter 2014

Spray on Shine. You can also try hot, beach-worthy waves. The key to getting this seductive hairstyle is to make sure you wrap larger sections of hair loosely around a large curling iron (I love the wand) to avoid tightly coiled curls. Run fingers through your hair to break up the pieces and muss up the ends for a sultry look. Finish with a light aerosol hairspray to add light hold that lends great movement. For shorter hair start by blow drying hair with a vent brush for extra volume and then switch to a round brush to flip the ends out. Rub in a dab of texture cream to complete the texturized look and you’re all set. Don't be afraid to add a little volume under any of these luscious curls and channel your inner lioness. If you want to show your sweet, romantic side, try glamorous finger waves. Wrap sections of hair around a medium-sized curling iron. Make sure to alternate directions for a voluminous look with extra bounce. You should achieve an 'S' pattern in the hair. You can choose to leave curls more separated or use a boar bristle brush to softly glide through tresses to soften the look. Finish with a smoothing fluid to tame flyways. Another option is to try a few easy updo's. Start by using a curling wand on small sections of hair to create texture. Finish

the look by pinning up the length at the nape of your neck, leaving just a few pieces out around the face. You can also make a low side ponytail, leaving a few pieces loose around your face. Twist the length of your ponytail, and wrap it into a figure-eight shape. Push it up against your scalp, and tuck the ends into the loop. Insert a few bobby pins to hold in place. Finish with Aveda's Air Control which will give you extra hold minus any stickiness. For more of a wild look try to incorporate braids, volume, texture and an overall unkempt look. Try this braided bun updo that will turn heads. Leave two sections out in front (everything from ear forward) and split the hair in the back into three horizontal sections. Add volume to the top section then twist a loose bun into each section and secure with bobby pins. Try to make each bun a little different and add texture. Now, braid the hair you left out into two sections on each side and tie off with clear elastics. Gently pull each of them apart so they don't look too done. Take the bottom braids from each side and wrap them around the bottom bun. Slide the braids in between the lowest bun and the middle bun, and then wrap it around the base of the bun and pin it in place. Repeat with top braids over the middle bun. This style can work with most hair types so go ahead and give it a try!

The color palate for this season consists of purples, plums, berries, and charcoal grays/ shimmer blacks. Aveda's makeup collection for fall/winter and the complimenting makeup gift set, Give Twinkling Eyes, capture these colors beautifully! If you want to play those lips up, let them be center stage! You can go matte or glossy in any of the rich colors for the season. Nude or pink blush lips are the best option to pair with these looks. A great chap stick like Aveda's Lip Saver adds a perfect supple shine, or a pretty nudetoned lipstick will give definition and tone while still looking natural. Add two layers of mascara and fill in brows for the perfect winter look. If you want stunning dramatic eyes think feline flicks—super long lashes and a touch of smokey shadow. A pretty pink blush is the perfect finishing touch to any look you choose this winter. No matter what hairstyle or makeup look you choose, you’re sure to shine this Valentines day. Love in any form makes everything beautiful. Feel great about starting 2014 with your beauty tips in hand and open the opportunity in front of you to make this year your best year yet!!

The New Beige Is Gray

After

BY KERRY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

AS WE ENTER INTO THE NEW YEAR, UPDATING A ROOM IN YOUR HOME CAN BE UPLIFTING AND A WELCOMED CHANGE. And right now gray is the trending color. As you will see in the before and after photos of this Carlsbad home in Bressi Ranch, not all grays are sad and depressing! In fact, gray with a lot of light can be serene, calming, and casual, says Georgene Scholey of Carras Designs in Carlsbad. In the room featured here, the paint color is a custom mix in a medium gray. It pairs beautifully with silvers, pewters, and mirrors. The mercury glass vase in this room has a tint of blue to it and lends a sophisticated look to the room with it’s white, long-stemmed roses. The soapstone box from India and the teak shallow bowl with a capiz shell inlay on the coffee table only enhances the beauty of the room. In addition, the elegant coffee table with it’s rusty bronze base and natural horn top is classic and modern. It mixes contemporary with inspired European antique reproductions. The sofa, a classic, Louis XV in chocolate is from Ballard Designs and redefines contemporary style. The sofa’s artistic natural elements and European influences combined with it’s more modern style helps it to blend nicely into the room. The Safavieh traditional arm chairs, upholstered in a cool beige, with their lumbar nail-head details add for a nice finish. Two Provence mirrored wall sconces in distressed hardwood flank the fireplace. The antique glass in the mirrors add a soft glow to the living room’s gray palette. The style of the room is very timeless with a modern flair. The iron doors on the fireplace create a beautiful ambiance. The artwork above the mantle includes soft watercolors from the Greek Island of Samos. To complete the look of the room, Georgene chose drapery panels in bluestone by Duralee, and 100% linen roman shades by Trend. The carpet, by Shaw, is a warm gray called “clamshell” with a geometric pattern. It ties into the room beautifully. If you’re not convinced that the new beige is gray, call Carras Designs and let them persuade you otherwise! A room in your home just may be calling out for a new chic look, and the grays we’ve seen here have clearly demonstrated how classically beautiful yet modern a room can become!

Wine & Cheese | CHAMPAGNE 

Why I Decided to Drink More Champagne BY JULIE WRIGHT

IN THE PAST, WHENEVER I RECEIVED BOTTLES OF BUBBLY AS GIFTS, THEY WOULD GATHER DUST AND SPOIL AS I WAITED FOR AN OCCASION WORTHY OF CELEBRATING. A few years ago, I realized that I had formed a nasty habit. I was deferring celebration. I didn’t think enough of my small accomplishments. I didn’t think I was worth it. After a little soul searching, in 2013, I made a small adjustment in my lifestyle. I adopted a New Year’s resolution to drink more Champagne. I started finding more things to celebrate. They ranged from big to small, like my 45th birthday or a good hair day.

Julie enjoying a glass of champagne atop of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

Julie Wright

President (W)right on Communications Inc.

I realized that Champagne is not something you drink alone, typically. My quest became a great excuse to get together with friends and loved ones. The result was stronger friendships and great memories. I researched brands and styles of bubbly and enjoyed learning about Champagne’s history as well as Spanish cava, Italian prosecco and more. My experiences ranged from bargain bubblies to sparkling Japanese sake to prestige Champagnes. For Super Bowl XL VII, I pitted Veuve Clicquot against a much less expensive French Cremant de Limoux. The Veuve (French for widow and so named for the woman who took over her deceased hus-

band’s enterprise) won hands down. When our family planned a summer vacation to Paris and Barcelona, I dragged everyone up to Reims, the capital of the French Champagne region. We toured the Pommery Champagne house and explored its miles of underground caverns where literally millions of bottles of Champagne are stored. My perfect Champagne moment was racing my son up the steps of the Eiffel Tower and discovering a Champagne bar at the very top where I toasted the beautiful city far below. It was the promise of green sparkling wine that motivated me to join a friend and train for a 15K run through Temecula’s wine country. That got my fitness regimen back on track. As a creative outlet, I started a Tumblr blog to document my progress, which also helped to keep me on track and keep the resolution fun: http://drinkmorechampagnein2013.tumblr.com. They say it takes two weeks to form a new habit or break an old one. I did both, and after one year, I think of drinking Champagne as a lifestyle. Over the coming years, I look forward to continuing to educate and indulge myself while always being ready to celebrate life’s little and large celebrations. Cheers!

Women in Business Nerium International Consultant

Mindy Stubblefield I, MINDY STUBBLEFIELD, AM JUST A REGULAR WOMAN TRYING TO COPE WITH THE PRESSURES OF EVERYDAY LIFE. I am a full-time wife, a mother of two, ages eight and five, and part-time dental hygienist in a family-friendly general dentistry practice in Carlsbad. As a parent, you only want what’s best for your children, but in today’s day and age that usually means both parents work one, and sometimes two, jobs. The last thing I wanted was to get involved in another demand that took time from my family. My long-term goal was to work less rather than more so I could be there for my kids. A very smart and successful businesswoman first suggested I look into owning my own home-based business and along came Nerium! Although I was skeptical, the more research I did the more benefits I saw in it, including being my own boss, creating my own hours, and the luxury of tax writeoffs. The success Nerium International had in such a very short period encouraged me to take the leap! For instance, it’s the youngest company ever featured in Success Magazine, it made $1 million in revenue in its first year of business, celebrity Jenny McCarthy promoted it on the TV morning show The View, CBS did an investigative news report on the product, and it was mentioned backstage at the American Country Music Awards. I was sold! Since making the decision to join forces with Nerium International and promoting their all natural botanical night cream, I have met so many amazing people. Their motto is loving, caring, sharing, and family, and that is the truth. My expectations of relationship marketing were not anything like I expected. I went into business FOR myself but definitely not BY myself. I get satisfaction from restoring the feeling of health in my clients when I can supply them with a product that actually works in reducing the appearance of fine and emerging lines, wrinkles, pore size, and discoloration. It hasn't been all rainbows and butterflies. My success with Nerium was not instantaneous; however it has been a lot more fun going to “wine and no-wrinkles” parties than hygiene school was! In just 34 short days with Nerium, I earned an iPad bonus on top of monetary compensation! The next bonus in my sights is the Lexus Car Bonus. I try to remind myself to not take myself so seriously and to have fun and enjoy people. I highly recommend that you find your passion and live it out. In addition, they display the masterpieces of our local artists throughout the store! It’s hard NOT to walk out the door of Kaila BB with something for yourself! It’s a shopper's paradise and a woman’s dream come true! This multi-vendor specialty gift store is home to more than 20 local vendors—all women with the exception of one man! Most of the vendors are considering opening their own shops. However, before investing in their own brick and mortar, they want to test the water and see how their products are received by the general public first. It’s the ultimate opportunity for the woman who dreams of opening her own store! Furthermore, the foundation upon which Kaila BB operates is that of integrity and encouragement. Pamela Vizanko, managing partner and brain child of Kaila BB, had spent 13 years in the aesthetic services market. It was when she opened an online store selling toddler clothing for girls that her idea was conceived. Why not meld the two careers she was passionate about together? The concept for Kaila BB was born! Through a lot of hard work, persistence, and a few unforeseen road blocks along the way, Pamela’s dream came true when she opened the doors of Kaila BB on December 22nd, 2012. Her tenacity to succeed and her dedication had paid off. Pamela’s goal is to offer the same opportunity to other women. With her support, Kaila BB empowers these women by bringing their dreams of business ownership to fruition. Their success is her success! And they share their success with various charities throughout the year. Last, but not least, Kaila BB is truly your one-stop shop! They took the term beauty bar and raised it to a whole new level by adding a med spa on site! They have a Medical Aesthetician that does, peels, waxes and facials. They also offer Restylane, Juvederm, Botox, Dysport, laser procedures, and laser hair removal by two licensed cosmetic RN’s, Daiquiri Rankin and Janet Wendle, and through the supervision of Medical Director Dr. Robert Kearney. BY CHARLIE MARTIN CERTIFIED EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COACH

HAVE YOU DEFINED ANY GOALS FOR YOURSELF FOR 2014? Goals are great, if they are stated correctly and the success measurements are clear. However, the step that is often missing in the process of goal setting is clearly defining WHY you’re setting the goal. A goal set without a clear understanding why may incline you to give up before you achieve it. Your life is busy and filled with distractions. For example, managing a busy career, keeping the domestic personal side of your life balanced, maintaining fitness and health, and continuing to grow and progress in your career or business are just a few of the many distractions we face each day. Don’t let all the distractions take away from what you really want to accomplish. Since it’s still January, perhaps it’s time to step back and rethink the WHY and define some clear achievable goals, develop a plan, and start taking the small steps to make those goals that seem so challenging come to life. Why is it so hard to define the CLEAR WHY’S? I recently worked with a female owner/CEO of a successful small business, and she was having a hard time discovering her WHY. Although we had good success working together on a variety of company performance management issues, she was still feeling leadership challenges. We begin working together to discover where the gap was between what she wanted and how she was being perceived. Soon, we began to uncover how her behavioral immune system was protecting her and at the same time getting in the way of her becoming the kind of leader she wanted to be. Once we began to uncover the WHYS we were able to make positive changes. It is possible that the beliefs you have established through a lifetime of experience may not be serving you well. Often, we are unable to recognize this is happening because we are seeing everything through the belief filters we have created. This is why it is so important to understand the WHY when you set goals. Identifying and overcoming your limiting beliefs takes time and focus. These beliefs actually have formed a behavioral immune system that protects you, but can also get in your way. You may, from time to time, feel like you have one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake. I recommend that you take whatever action is necessary to thoroughly understand your WHY for any goal you set for 2014. Any investment you make in better understanding yourself and your WHYS will pay big dividends in your future success!
